Story
Seventy years have passed since the Partition, and a momentous event now recedes in memory. Generations have grown up outside the shadow of the communal killings and mass displacement that shaped the contemporary history of the subcontinent. Despite being born into a family affected by the Divide, artist and oral historian Aanchal Malhotra too had thought little about the Partition until she encountered objects that had once belonged to her ancestors in an Undivided India.

Story
In 1526, when the nomadic Timurid warrior-scholar Babur rode into Hindustan, his wives, sisters, daughters, aunts and distant female relatives travelled with him. These women would help establish a dynasty and empire that would rule India for the next 200 years and become a byword for opulence and grandeur. In Daughters of the Sun, we meet remarkable characters like Khanzada Begum who, at 65, rode on horseback through 750 kilometres of icy passes and unforgiving terrain to parley on behalf of her nephew, Humayun....

Publisher's Summary
The Ramayana, one of the world's greatest epics, is also a tragic love story. In this brilliant retelling, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni places Sita at the centre of the novel: this is Sita's version. The Forest of Enchantments is also a very human story of some of the other women in the epic, often misunderstood and relegated to the margins: Kaikeyi, Surpanakha, Mandodari. A powerful comment on duty, betrayal, infidelity and honour, it is also about women's struggle to retain autonomy in a world that privileges men, as Chitra transforms an ancient story into a gripping, contemporary battle of wills. While the Ramayana resonates even today, she makes it more relevant than ever, in the underlying questions in the novel: How should women be treated by their loved ones? What are their rights in a relationship? When does a woman need to stand up and say, 'Enough!'

A story that needs to be heard!
@cdivakaruni Just finished The Forest of Enhancements, and totally in love with your interpretation of the story from Sita's pov. Crisp and brilliant storytelling without hiding the flaws or over-glorifying any character. Thank you for beautiful storytelling! 🙏🏻

A tale of valour, love and sorrow
I had tears in my eyes when I finished listening to the last few words of the epilogue. The powerful narration of Suchitra Pillai for the heart wrenching Sitayan by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, combine to make the fable so powerful and inspiring that one gets transported to the era of Ram Rajya. The book unfolds the deepest sorrows of Sita’s journey and surfaces them so beautifully through her untold story that it shakes you from within. The story exudes the strength of a woman and the other women who come in her path. It reveals a tender soul who was born with healing powers, endured injustice which she didn’t deserve but finally stood up to say ‘no more’ when tested time to time. It’s a miraculous book, inspiring me and jolting me from within to believe in one’s own power while staying kind. Amazing piece of literary art, symbolic of divine feminine strength!

enchanting
brilliant writing and superb narration. the words along with the voice are so powerful that one can feel the emotions depicted in the story. the book changes the way you understand Sita, having shown her radical and liberating perspective rather than how she has always been depicted to us from the conservative Ramayana stories. she is fierce and gentle. she is calm as well as confident. she knows what she wants and owns it. she chooses how she would live even when difficult fate is forced upon her by the decisions made by others. I guess that's how the author sees Sita's character and this vision has been the most inspiring and satisfying for me so far. definitely recommended.
